Last Friday our LAGSES BASIS (Bay Area Scientists in Schools) team went to Berkeley Arts Magnet School to introduce kids to engineering and science.
They prepared a lesson called the “Catapult Challenge” which consists in building a catapult with restricted materials and limited time. Students have to be creative and think about possible solutions to the problem.
This visit was organized by our Outreach team, the activity was proposed and organized by one of our Outreach chairs, Daniel Ocasio. Daniel is a second year PhD student in Evironmental Engineering. His main motivation to organize this lesson was to introduce younger students to science and engineering in a relaxed and fun environment. He hopes to organize visits to more schools during the next semester.
